🐚 The Story Behind the Shell: What is Capiz?
The centerpiece of Capiz Tides collection is the Capiz shell, a natural material harvested from the Windowpane Oyster (Placuna placenta), found primarily in the shallow coastal waters of the Philippines and Indonesia.
Capiz is celebrated for its stunning translucence and pearl-like luster. Historically used in windows before glass became common, it has the unique ability to filter light, creating a soft, ethereal glow.
While naturally an off-white, pearlescent color, Capiz shell is porous, making it the perfect canvas for vibrant dyes. For these earrings, the shell has been carefully shaped and appliqued with a chevron design with fuchsia, purple, and pink tones, while maintaining that signature natural shimmer underneath.
We’ve paired this organic beauty with Aurora Borealis (AB) glass crystals. The AB finish was created in the 1950s to mimic the Northern Lights; its iridescent coating reflects a spectrum of colors that perfectly complements the shifting hues of the shell.
One of the best features of Capiz shell is that it is incredibly lightweight. You get the visual impact of a large, colorful statement piece without the heaviness of stone or metal, allowing for comfortable all-day wear.
