Whenever my mom and I travel back home to the Philippines, she always looks for mangosteen. Of course, depending on the season, she either gets to enjoy the fruits or she has to wait until the next time we return. Luckily on our last trip, we were able to catch the tail end of its seasonality, much to my mom's delight.
Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) is an exotic fruit native to Southeast Asia, and is primarily farmed in Mindanao, Philippines. Being difficult to grow makes this fruit a precious commodity when it comes into season.
Often hailed as the queen of fruits, mangosteen wears a regal crown of chartreuse green and maroon brown dappled petals.
Its allure lies in the delicate, sweet-tart flavor of its succulent white segments, each nestled within a deep purple and burgundy red husk (pericarp) that can leave your fingers stained as you eagerly pry it open by hand, ready to indulge in its juicy treasures. Not only a treat for the taste buds, but the pericarp, rich in antioxidants, is also utilized in making tea.
Benefits of Mangosteen:
- Antioxidant Protection: Mangosteen pericarp is loaded with antioxidants such as xanthones, which help neutralize free radicals and protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by environmental factors like UV radiation and pollution.
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: The anti-inflammatory properties of mangosteen pericarp can help soothe irritated or inflamed skin, reducing redness, swelling, and discomfort.
- Skin Regeneration: Some studies suggest that mangosteen pericarp may promote skin regeneration by stimulating collagen production and enhancing skin elasticity, leading to a more youthful appearance.
- Antimicrobial Activity: Compounds found in mangosteen pericarp exhibit antimicrobial properties, which can help fight against acne-causing bacteria and other pathogens, promoting clearer and healthier skin.
- Brightening Effect: The antioxidants present in mangosteen pericarp may help to even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation, resulting in a brighter and more radiant complexion.
- Moisturizing Benefits: Mangosteen pericarp contains natural moisturizing agents that can help hydrate the skin, keeping it soft, smooth, and supple.
- Anti-aging Effects: By protecting against oxidative stress, promoting collagen synthesis, and supporting skin regeneration, mangosteen pericarp may help to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.
